2015-04-30 02:11:29 Topic : About the probability of another big quake in Kathmandu Nepal friends...please read as I know there lots of rumors swirling about more potential big quakes coming. Just off the phone with geophysicist Becky Bendick (who has worked in Nepal for years) and here are the facts: In the rupture zone, all the models suggest that the elastic energy that was stored there is gone and that the events happening (aftershocks should taper down and get smaller). The BIG unknown is the next section over to the west where the biggest earthquake happened in 1505. It was an estimated 8.8+ quake that stretched from Pokhara to the Indian Himalaya and there is a lot of energy stored there and this big thrust event which happened on Saturday affects that adjacent segment so the possibility of a quake to the west is much higher than it was a few days ago. That area covers 1/5 of the Himalayan arc. NO ONE, I repeat no one can say if that big quake will come tomorrow or 300 years from now but the risk is higher than a week ago because the edge of the rupture intersects with the stress in the western section. hope that makes sense. Also, in touch with NASA. No one there is predicting more big quakes. This is all just hullah and should be silenced NA

2015-04-30 00:56:06 Topic : Prevent Epedemics-Tips y Reena Lamichanee To prevent epidemics, the problems should be prevented at the source, i.e, the root causes that lead to epidemics following natural disasters. The first and foremost need at present is treatment of trauma injuries, and providing emergency disaster relief to the victims. The next critical thing is post impact management.....The public health/health care people need to START assessing the epidemic disease risks ASAP!! For management the root causes that need to be addressed would be: 1. unplanned and overcrowded shelters, 2. insufficient and unsafe water 3. insufficient food 4. improper waste disposal, 5. stagnant water after heavy rains. The diseases we are looking at are water-borne diseases, air-borne diseases, vector-borne diseases, and wound infections. Specific diseases that should be targeted are: diarrheal diseases like cholera and dysentery; leptosirosis; acute respiratory diseases like pneumonia and influenza; meningococcal menigitis; TB; malaria; dengue fever, post trauma wound infections such as Tetanus and Gas Gangrene. At the bottom of my list would be mass vaccinations for preventing epidemics such as measles. NA
